Weaning is a busy time of year for sheep farmers with the new season lambs really hitting their stride.

If you haven’t already, it’s time to think about trace element testing to ensure your growth rates are maximised to their potential.

There are three main trace element deficiencies common in the Wairarapa. These are copper, selenium and cobalt. Not knowing the trace element status of your stock or your farm could be costing you, either in unnecessary supplementation or through lost performance.

Common symptoms include:

  • Poor growth rates
  • Poor reproduction (infertility, pregnancy loss, young lamb deaths)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Bone fractures in severe cases
