Some handy tips on how to deal with the heat and heat stroke during the warmer summer months 🥵
☀️What is heat stroke?
Heat stroke is a heat-related illness. This occurs when the body struggles to regulate its temperature and it rises quickly.
🔥Breeds that are most at risk
- Flat face breeds (brachycephalic) – like Pugs, French bulldogs, Persians, and Bulldogs
- Breeds with a thick undercoat like Husky’s
- Large breed dogs like Newfoundlands
- Working dogs- when worked in the heat of the day
🔥Signs of heat stroke🔥
- Drooling
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Excessive panting
- Respiratory distress – (uncomfortable, not moving, abdominal breathing)
- Red gums
- Unresponsive
- Seizuring
☀️How can we help prevent heat stroke?
- Taking for walks early in the morning and late in the afternoon to avoid the hottest hour. (heat of the day)
- Access to shade during the day
- Providing plenty of water
- Placing ice cubes in water bowls
- Not leaving animals in cars during the day
