Some handy tips on how to deal with the heat and heat stroke during the warmer summer months 🥵

☀️What is heat stroke?

Heat stroke is a heat-related illness. This occurs when the body struggles to regulate its temperature and it rises quickly.

🔥Breeds that are most at risk

  • Flat face breeds (brachycephalic) – like Pugs, French bulldogs, Persians, and Bulldogs
  • Breeds with a thick undercoat like Husky’s
  • Large breed dogs like Newfoundlands
  • Working dogs- when worked in the heat of the day

🔥Signs of heat stroke🔥

  • Drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Excessive panting
  • Respiratory distress – (uncomfortable, not moving, abdominal breathing)
  • Red gums
  • Unresponsive
  • Seizuring

☀️How can we help prevent heat stroke?

  • Taking for walks early in the morning and late in the afternoon to avoid the hottest hour. (heat of the day)
  • Access to shade during the day
  • Providing plenty of water
  • Placing ice cubes in water bowls
  • Not leaving animals in cars during the day
