Uh oh it’s started! We are starting to see Barley Grass infections in our patients! With the weather warming up this is prime time for barley grass to get stuck in our animals.
Spots barley grass seeds can be found are:
🌾 Between the toes like displayed below
🌾 In the ears
🌾In their armpits
🌾 In their eyes
🌾 In the mouth
🌾Inhaled into their lungs
If barley grass seeds arent removed immediately this increases the risk of them burrowing deeper into the body where they then can become difficult to remove. For example- they can migrate to the abdominal cavity or chest cavity. This is life threatening.
Signs your pet may have a seed lodged
- Head shaking
- Excessive licking
- Pawing at eyes or nose
- Abnormal holes or swellings between toes etc
If you’re concerned please bring your animal in to see one of our vets!
